A Little Update on Scott

(This picture of Scott with his Utah family was taken the DAY B4 his accident...)
Sorry it's been so long since I've posted, there hasn't been a lot of new news.

Scott had a procedure done yesterday in Salt Lake...I'm not sure it was an actual surgery, so I'm not going to call it one, just in case! The procedure was to remove the wires and anchors holding his mouth closed and replace them with bands. If I understand correctly, this gives him more mobility and makes it possible for him the talk a little better. This should allow him to eat other foods too, like pudding, jello, yogurt. (Hopefully his weight loss won't be too drastic, if he can add more things to his menu!) The ordeal was quite painful from what Janell has shared with me. It was planned that his jaw would then stay wired for approx. 4 more weeks, but the doctor is talking like they might be able to remove that in 2 more weeks. Janell is trying to arrange Scott's care to be transfered to Colorado so his transition back to Colorado after the holidays will be nice and easy. We'll see!

There was also some other bad news shared with Scott's family...he had a cut under his eye, very close to his lower eyelid (which is where the surgeon gained access to place the metal plates in his face) that they presumed would heal nicely with no issues. Well, it isn't. Scotts eyelashes are growing into his eye because his lower lid is rolling inwards. They now have to see an eye surgeon to correct this. I don't know any timeframe or other info on that yet. Setbacks are a real frustration for him, I'm sure. I will inform when I know something.
So...recovery continues at a medium pace. Thanks for all your prayers for Scott and his family. The support Janell has recieved was and has been so helpful. With everyone's continued prayers and support we can help make the holidays a little easier to get through. If anyone has any questions ect. in regards to how to help, please contact me or Janell's mom, Cathy. My email is debzemlock@msn.com. Hug your kids and let them know you love them...besides they might bu putting off some extra warmth!!!

2nd surgery update

Scott is coping. Janell says the 2nd surgery (to wire his mouth and jaw) was alot worse than the first. Scott is in much more pain and very frustrated that he can't open his mouth. With the repairs that were done for his nose it was hard enough to breathe, but now his mouth is wired shut. All I can think of is anxiety about not being able to breath...
Scott is at his Dad's (Brian) house. He feels so bad right now, the family is not allowing visitors. His overall mood sounds pretty dark, so anything you can do the cheer him up would be great.
Janell and Chelsea came home from Utah after visiting Scott on Saturday. It was VERY hard for them to leave, but there were important things back in Rifle to take care of as well. (Scott is in good hands right now and close to his Doctors if anything was to happen, God forbid.) Janell will make the trip back to Utah in 2 weeks for Scott's 3rd surgery to remove the wire and anchors holding his mouth shut and replacing them with bands. He will have more mobility then and less pain hopefully.
Any support you can give Scott and his family here in Rifle would be greatly apppreciated. What a rough holiday season.
Thank you to all the RHS Football players and coaches that signed his poster and cards, he will be getting those soon. Thanks also to the RHS students that signed the cards for Ms. Skinner...Scott is lucky to have so many people caring about him! Scott's Grandma Cathy has a collection of signs ect. and cards as well, if you'd like to drop something off for Scott with her.
I will write new posts as I hear new news, and definitly after his next procedure. Thanks for all of your prayers and support. Keep it up!!

News...

This surgery for Scott has been pretty awful. His family was told it would take 2 to 2 1/2 hours to perform and it was twice that long. Scott's mouth and jaw is completely wired closed. He can barely speak and is in quite a bit of pain. Scott is very angry. I don't think he was well informed by his doctors as to what was really being done. At least not all the fine details, anyways. His mouth will stay like this for 2 weeks, then they will unwire his mouth and just band it, which will give him more mobility and he will be able to speak better. Now, he has to eat by syringe. Like I said before, milkshakes and liquid diet. Janell has told me that he has lost 11 pounds since the accident, and will lose much more I'm sure. They are going to add Ensure and nutritional powders ect. to his drinks to help him retain as much as he can. He isn't tolerating the pain as well as he did after the first surgery. The "anesthesia anger" was still present as well as just anger for the situation. Sorry you're having such a difficult time Scott.
Janell and Chelsea had originally planned to return home tomorrow, but I don't think that is happening. I don't think they are sure what they are doing. Chelsea is scheduled to take an international trip on Wednesday...
Scott is at his Dad's house in Spanish Fork. As soon as I can get an address for him there, I will get permission to pass that along to all of you, by other means. Not on the blog!
Please keep Scott and hif family in your prayers. His little brothers are all here in Rifle and the only one to see Scott has been Taylor. They all love their' big brother very much and I know they are really missing their Mom. Janell is having a hard time too, being away from the rest of her kiddos this long. God-willing she can come home soon, too.
I will add another post tomorrow when I talk to Janell and Chelsea again.

Surgery Update

Hey All You Scott Webb Fans!
I've heard that Scott came out of surgery without medical complications. His jaw is completely wired shut with wires and anchors in his gums. It will stay this way for approximately 6 LONG WEEKS! That's alot of milkshakes, smoothies and soup. He's really going to be a skinny boy craving REAL food!
I haven't heard if they've sent him out of the hospital yet or not. Keep checking back. I will add info as I get it.
~Debbie
PS. Thanks to all that have contacted family or Rebecca in regards to gift cards, checks and money. Everything is soooo appreciated. Hug your kids!

Surgery #2 Underway

Sorry I didn't get to update last night...homework requiring the internet came first.
Scott had to be at the hospital in Salt Lake City at 7 am. Surgery was scheduled for 9 am and via text message, Grandma Cathy learned that they took him back to begin at 9:14 am. The surgery is slated to take 2 or 2 1/2 hours, and is still to be an outpatient procedure.
Janell and Chelsea spent most of the day yesterday with him, taking a drive and going a couple of places. It sounds like he was pretty grouchy, and I'm sure it was nerves. It would be safe to say he was not thrilled about a 2nd surgery.
Otherwise, I think he's been getting along okay since leaving the hospital. Still having some pain and taking quite a bit of different stuff..antibiotics, nasal sprays, eye ointments, pain meds. I think his recovery is progressing fine despite the surgery today.
I will keep ya posted. Please pray for them all today. We can all use extra prayers, right?

Thursday December 4

Contrary to my update last night, I am not leaving for Utah. The way things were beginning to unfold, I would be going by myself. Much too long of a drive to be alone, my family decided. I'm disappointed and sad that I cannot be there for Janell and Chelsea....just upset that I won't get to see Scott. On top of everything else I woke up with a sore throat and stuffy nose today. I guess Scott doesn't need a cold on top of everything else. I think we are going to send his cards etc. to his Dad's address so he knows you all are thinking of him.

Scott asked his Mom and sister to take him for a drive this morning. Probably tired of being cooped up in the house. Chelsea sent this picture to me, it might be from when he left the hospital, I'm not entirely sure. As I'm typing this, I received the 2nd pic of Chelsea and Scott watching tv, I'm assuming!

I will update more later....don't forget Scott in your daily thoughts and prayers.

Update...Day 6

Scott has been at his dad's for the last day or so. His surgery to wire his jaw is on Friday, we just don't have a time for it yet. Scotts' dad lives approx. and hour from the hospital in Salt Lake, so it will be a relatively short trip. It sounds like they are doing this as an outpatient procedure, as long as everything goes well during and after the surgery.
After surgery, Scott will be staying at his dads' until after the Christmas holidays, I believe. The trip home is quite long and the doctors there are already familiar with his case. It seems to make some since I guess. I'm not sure why, but Scott is not in a restrictive brace or anything. Kinda scary, I'm thinking...maybe that's why I'm not a doctor.
He is still expieriencing some pain but does have medication as well as antibiotics for all of that. As long as he takes everything the way he's supposed to, he should be able to tolerate most of the discomfort he's having.
I'm leaving Rifle for Utah on Thursday morning to be with Janell and Chelsea through this second surgery. God willing, the surgery will go as expected with no problems, and we will all travel home on Saturday.
Thank you to all that has kept Scott and his family in your prayers. It means alot to him to know that so many people are in his corner!
I will update as soon as I can, from Utah.

Surprise!

Well, guess what? Scott is at his Dad's house in Spanish Fork, Utah. Much to everyone's surprise the doctors cleared his back (he actually has fractures at T4 & T5 AND T7 & T8!) and released him. He will be having surgery to wire his jaw on Friday and I believe it's going to be on an outpatient basis. Keep up those prayers that surgery goes well on Friday and we have no anesthesia issues again!
Janell and Chelsea are staying in a hotel between Salt Lake and Spanish Fork so they are still close to Scott and close to the hospital.
Unfortunately, I don't have a time frame for how soon Scott will be back in Rifle. It is possible that he may temporarily be staying in Utah..nobody is sure yet. (as far as I know!)
Although the wind tore down our posters and signs at Grandma Cathy's house, I will be helping to get all those things back up! Keep them coming! Scott is going to love them.
Scott, if you are out there in cyber space reading this...The Rifle Zemlocks are sending lots of love and prayers your way! We miss you and can't wait to hopefully see you for the holidays! Rifle isn't the same without you around!! Keep up with all the hard work!
Thanks for all the comments on the blog....

Another surgery

A small amount of new news...Scott's jaw is not setting right so he IS going back to surgery. Originally scheduled for Friday, but if the ENT (Ears, Nose and Throat) Doctor can move a surgery schedule around he may have it as early as tomorrow. (The ENT is however, very surprised with how fast he is progressing.) Scott is not pleased! Janell says overall, he's doing wonderful.
He has been up and slowly walking in the hallways. Not sprinting, but walking. It is exhausting for him, I'm sure. I don't think the doctors have completely "cleared" his back yet, (meaning it's all ok) but they are still having conversations as to whether he needs a brace or not. T4 & T5 are "fractured" not broken....so, I guess we'll see what happens. He could be released from the hospital very soon, depending on the outcome of his surgery.
For you friends out there with Scott's cell #, call and leave him a voice mail...they are playing him his messages daily. There are also, some posters and cards being left on the fence at his Grandma's house...feel free to leave your card ect. or come sign one that's already there.
Don't forget to say those prayers, they sure have been working. Let's also pray that Scott will be back home in Rifle as soon as possible. We miss you Scott and hope you get to feeling better.
Thanks again for everything. What a wonderful little town we live in!
~Debbie
ps. Thanks to Rebecca and Justin for their generosity of lodging help for Janell & Chelsea. You guys are amazing!

Just a speed bunp

Grandma Cathy just called to share with me that Scott is headed back to surgery. Apparently the ENT Doctor that did his surgery thought that without wiring Scotts' jaw it would heal fine if Scott did what they asked...no chewing ect. Well, his jaw is not aligning right, so on Friday they will do surgery to wire his jaw and correct that problem. Nobody is happy about this news, especially Scott.
Like I continue to say, don't stop praying.
~Debbie

A Little Update

Well, Scott must be feeling a little better...stubborn enough to complain about his roommate. He now has a private room! I didn't get to talk to Janell, but Scott's grandma Cathy shared a little bit of info with me and I'm sharing with all of you.
It doesn't sound like they have done anything in regards to his back yet. Scott keeps tellng everyone to "Ssshhhh" about it...like they are going to forget! The doctors are giving him blood thinners (shots in the stomach) because of his limited mobility. They don't want to have to deal with any blood clots. As you can all imagine, our friend Scott is not very happy about this at all! None the less, the doctors are winning and he keeps getting the shots.
Janell and Chelsea are still at his bedside. I'm sure they are anxiously awaiting progress reports so they can determine when Scott will be able to come HOME!
Scott..although you already know this, you have tons of friends here in Rifle that wish they could be there with you right now. Lots of the kids would like to take off on a trek to Salt Lake alone, and that is a little more difficult for everyone here, because you are so far away. Please know, that just because you don't have a waiting room full of friends there, doesn't mean that you don't have a room full here. The number of calls that I have recieved in regards to your health and the tiniest bit of any information has been amazing. The parent's here are concerned with the kids taking off on a trip and being in an accident themselves. The weather here over the weekend wasn't real super. So PLEASE remember that we are with you in spirit and in your heart...just not in the waiting room.
I will post again after hearing from Janell today....

Not Much New News Tonite

Hey All....thanks for leaving comments on the blog. I've been printing them out to put in a journal for Scott. These will be real meaningful for one reason or another when he looks back on them. Keep them coming!

As I said before, Scott is now on the regular floor rotation. He has an older gentlemen "rooming" with him that he isn't real pleased about, but it will all work out, I'm sure. Here is a pic his stepmom took of him waving at everyone. He is so grateful for everyone and the prayers and happy thoughts they've been sending.

Scott is in a MUCH better frame of mind today than he was after surgery last night. I was at the hospital when Scott had his appendix removed a year or so ago, and he was ANGRY when he got back to his room. Janell now knows for sure, that Scott and anesthesia don't really agree afterwards! She says he was super sweet today and apologized tons.

Janell and I haven't talked since this morning. I hope she's trying to catch up on some much needed rest, while Scott is doing better. I will post anything new I hear. Please don't stop praying!

Thanks again for all the comments~Debbie

GREAT NEWS!

Scott has now been moved from ICU!

He is at the University of Utah on the 6th floor under "Preston Goodnight"...he can now accept flowers ect.

Way to hang in there Scottie! We are all so proud of you. Keep doing what the doctors ask of you so you can get better and come home!
~Debbie

Day 5...Good News!!

Scott has successfully come through surgery and is doing well. His heart rate is pretty stable at about 50 to 70 beats per minute. At his worst it was at about 20 beats per minute. His Mom reports that he's not as bruised as she thought he might be and looks real good considering what he's been through. If all continues to go well, he might be moved from ICU today! All of your prayers continue to work!
The doctors haven't said alot, but will now focus on the issues with Scott's back. He is still moving both arms and legs. (He was having difficulty moving one leg, but it couldv'e been how he was positioned or laying.)
Scott's Colorado family has left and are driving home...we wish them all a safe trip. Janell and Chelsea remain there in Salt Lake with Scott. Scott's Utah family is at the hopital as well...many Utah friends of Scotts' have also trickled in and out. Chelsea has recieved many text and calls from friends here in Rifle...Janell knows that if he were closer to home you would all be at the hosptal keeping 24 hour vigil. That also comforts her heart. She knows we all are thinking of Scott and the family and she appreciates each and every one of you. Many thanks for all the love and prayers, and the many church families that have included Scott in their prayer chains. The power of prayer IS amazing!
Enjoy the new pictures...Chelsea took them recently.
Keep checking back for updates~Debbie

Still Waiting...

Scott is back in his room and with his mom. We haven't spoke since I last posted. Chelsea shared with me that Janell has been back with him for over an hour, but only Janell.
I can imagine it's pretty rough, and some people are very angry coming out from under anesthesia, so I'm sure she will update us as soon as she can...you know I will post it as fast as I can. Thanks to all of you that keep calling and checking in. Keep reading...let's have faith that the news will continue to get better and better.~Debbie

Surgery Is Over

Scott is finally out of surgery. I spoke with Janell around 7 pm. He did awesome through the surgery. They were getting ready to "bring Scott around" and transfer to recovery so I will post with everything new when I hear from her. She did say she'd call as soon as she got to see him!

Thank you God!

Update 4...still in surgery

4:45pm
Scott is doing well during surgery...and is having no issues. They are placing metal plates in his cheeks, both sides of his nose, his chin and his upper and lower jaw. According to his stepmom, Shelly, they are hoping not to have to wire his jaw.
The family continues their support from the waiting room. It sounds like a full house.
Way to go Scott...we're sending good thoughts your way! Waiting for another family update and will post again.

Love~Debbie

Day 4...update

Scott "passed his tests" with the anesthesiologist and went into surgery about 12:45 this afternoon. The Doctors "cleared" his neck (meaning that his neck was free from injury and would sustain the movement required to perform the surgery) and his heart rate is stable. He was still expieriencing some significant pain (due to decreased pain meds) but Grandma Cathy reports, that he was really trying to "tough it out."
An hour into the surgery, I heard from Grandma Cathy again, and the family had recieved their first news from the surgery staff. Scott was doing well...they were able to intibate (I'm sure that is spelled wrong!) him through his nose instead of doing a trachiotomy (still not sure on the spelling, but I think you all will get it!) so that is a good sign. That is all for breathing purposes. Originally the surgery was to be approx. 5 hours, but could very well be longer than that, depending what situations they encounter and the damage that has occured to his face.

Scott is holding his own, and I'm sure an angel is holding his hand. Please keep your prayers and thoughts coming, he needs us all right now. Many thanks from his family for all of the support. I will post again as soon as I get the next update.~Debbie

Update 3

I spoke with Janell late this evening and basically the news is the same. After our conversation, it appears that it will be a good sign if Scott's surgery goes on as planned...that means that his heart is holding up enough to sustain some anesthesia. The doctors have reduced his pain meds so that his body is a little more alert, and they can keep his heart rate up. The pain meds relax him a bit too much. The downside to that is that he is feeling more and is quite a bit more miserable.
The surgery is to repair his nose (broken and crooked) and nasal cavaties (which are completely shattered), his cheeks (using metal plates) and his broken jaw. He right eye has a shattered orbital bone (I think that is what it is called) and although he can see now, it is possible that some loss of eyesight may occur with the surgery. His left eye is cut as well, not as badly as I understand. Still no update on his back, besides the fact that it is fractured at T4 and T5...he still has movement in his arms and legs. Janell said tonight that he is struggling to move his left leg a little.
Scott's friends that were in the truck with him have both visited with members of their families. They are both physically fine, (I haven't heard otherwise) but very upset and concerned for Scott, as can be expected. Extra prayers for them as well would be greatly appreciated.
Please leave comments on this blog if you are comfortable with that...the families are reading and I'm sure would love some messages from the people who love, care and are concerned about Scott.
Thanks again for all the support and prayers. Have a good night Scott. We're thinking about you...

Update 2

Well...Scott is hanging in there. Thank you's go out to everyone who is keeping Scott in their prayers. The family is so appreciative and gracious for all the love being sent Scott's way.

Scott's facial surgery might not happen in the morning. The anesthesiologist is going to perform some tests this evening (and overnight, I believe) to reassure them that Scott can hold up throughout the long procedure that he needs. His lungs are working well, but his heart is still having a hard time keeping up and that is a major concern. His family will hopefully have good news in the late evening/early morning about the possibility of surgery.

Otherwise, there has really been no new information. His Rifle family members had a safe journey to Salt Lake to be with him, as well as his stepmom and brothers from Spanish Fork Utah. I've been told he has a regular pep squad in the waiting room! I'm sure Scott appreciates each and every one of them. The only visitor not to make it so far, and won't be making the trek is Buster the Beagle. If anyone has a connection for a stuffed beagle dog, let me know!

Attached is a picture of the truck Scott was riding in. Scott was a passenger in the back, passenger side of the truck. Disturbing is one of many words that comes to mind. As far as I know, neither of Scott's friends were injured in the accident. I'm sorry it had to be Scott, but grateful that all 3 boys weren't hurt. Everyone please be careful...you just never realize how precious your life is until something like this happens.

I will update this again tonight if I get any new information from Janell. Otherwise, check back in the morning. I will post as soon as I hear.

Keep those prayers going....Thanks, Debbie

As some of you may know, Scott Webb left Rifle on Monday 11/24 to visit his Dad and extended family in Spanish Fork, Utah for the Thanksgiving holiday. In the early hours of Wed. 11/26, he was with some friends and involved in a rollover truck accident. His injuries were severe and required him to be life flighted to a hospital in Salt Lake City, where he currently is being cared for.

Scott is in ICU. His mom, Janell; sister, Chelsea; and grandmother, Cathy; have been there at the hospital with him, since early in the day on Thursday. His dad Brian and extended family in Utah are also at his side. The remaining members of Scotts' Rifle family are making the trip to Salt Lake over the next couple of days.

Scott is responsive and is able to talk some. He suffers from a broken back (no paralysis), broken ribs and a great deal of internal facial damage (broken nose, cheekbones, broken jaw). He also is having complications from bruising to his heart and lungs. Because the doctors are most concerned about his heart and lungs, they have not placed Scott in a brace or anything for his back. He is in a collar for his neck. Although, he's able to communicate, he is by no means "out of the woods". At this time, he is scheduled for surgery to repair his facial damage Saturday morning. The family has been told the surgery will take approximately 5 hours. The doctors are monitoring his stability closely, to be sure this surgery will be possible.

At this point, all we can do for Scott is pray and continue to support his family. Please feel welcome to bring cards, signs, pictures, ect. to Scott's home in Rifle...I will be sending the cards to his mom at the hopital to share with Scott.

This time of year, while we are showing thanks for the blessings we all have in our lives, let's also be thankful for God watching over Scott during this time and ask for his guidance in helping him to make a complete recovery from this terrible accident.

I will update this blog as I hear from Janell and keep all of you informed of Scott's progress. Thanks for keeping Scott in your prayers~Debbie
